Together, with Wells Beef Shorthorn Stud, we run approximately 50 first cross Belgium Blue X cows.

 

It was the love of the Belgium Blue cattle that led us to the highly successful Belgium Blue x Beef Shorthorn calves. They ticked all the boxes. Fertility, calving ease, temperament, softness and do ability. From our first purchase of a Moombi Shorthorn bull's first calf, it was clear that the Beef Shorthorn provided significant benefits. These well put together strong calves, had enormous stage presence with added performance. The ability to blend with other breeds are unlike any other cross I have experienced before. The dress out percentages are achieving the 60 – 66%.

 

The risk, of daring to be different, paid off. The most rewarding factor in this initiative is that clearly the belief, black is better, is not always the case. The refreshing idea is that the one thing that all breeds share is, RED MEAT. It is well documented that roan cattle offer superior eating quality. Due to the softness that the beef shorthorn infuses into the calves. I predict that the Beef shorthorn roan bulls, will be the next big thing. Besides, who doesn’t love a roan Shorthorn bull!

The rewarding additional benefit with this cross is the replacement heifer calves, that are highly sort after.

With repeat buyers, waiting for the next draft. As front paddock cattle they rear outstanding calves, that have plenty of quality milk to grow their calves. I have found that the growing customer base, have their favourite colours. Be it strawberry roan, blue roan, white, red and white or the blue roans. These shorthorn plus calves deliver, added profitability to our valued customers, which I find very rewarding.
